A major fire has broken out at a landfill of loose plastics between the towns of Rynholec and Lány in the Central Bohemian Region.
Around 250 firefighters are currently battling the blaze, with over 100 units of equipment deployed. The fire and rescue service has declared a special level of emergency. According to officials, the fire has spread across an area approximately 200 by 200 meters, with the landfill reaching a height of five meters. Despite intensive efforts, the situation remains critical.
Overnight, firefighters managed to fill the gaps between piles of plastic with foam to prevent the fire from spreading further. However, strong winds continue to complicate the operation by carrying hot particles into areas not yet affected by the fire.
The fire is accompanied by extremely high temperatures. Medical assistance was required for 12 firefighters, one of whom sustained burns to the shoulder. The fire service explained that such injuries can occur when sweat vaporizes and accumulates on the skin under intense heat.
Firefighters continue to work in emergency mode and warn that full containment of the fire may still take considerable time.
