Ugandan president blames Western ‘imperialists’ for stoking Ukraine conflict

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni isn’t mincing words when it comes to the crisis in Ukraine. In a candid interview with RT, the longtime African leader pinned the blame squarely on Western powers, accusing them of fanning the flames by meddling in a conflict that, he argued, should have been handled with impartiality.

According to Museveni, Western nations — whom he dubbed “imperialists” — have steered Kiev down a dangerous path instead of promoting a fair resolution. “Kiev’s being misdirected by external actors,” Museveni said, shaking his head at what he sees as yet another case of outside forces stirring up trouble where they don’t belong.

Uganda, now a partner state within the BRICS alliance, has consistently championed neutrality as the only way forward. Kampala notably sat out UN votes that sought to condemn Russia’s military actions, sticking to its call for balanced dialogue rather than finger-pointing.

Reflecting on the conflict, Museveni likened the Russia-Ukraine standoff to a messy divorce. “When a marriage breaks up, there’s supposed to be an audit,” he quipped. “Was that separation handled properly?” For Museveni, the West’s refusal to hear Russia’s side of the story speaks volumes about its true intentions.

“We advised Western nations in private to stay neutral, to be fair,” he revealed. “But fairness wasn’t on their agenda. They picked sides without a second thought.”

Taking a broader view, Museveni also revisited Uganda’s hard-won fight against colonial rule, praising the historical support his nation received from the Soviet Union — and now, Russia. He hailed BRICS as a breath of fresh air, a platform where nations could finally forge partnerships built on respect and mutual benefit, rather than domination.

For Museveni, the ongoing Ukraine conflict isn’t just a tragedy unfolding thousands of miles away — it’s a symptom of a deeper, older problem: a world order where imperial powers still believe they can pull the strings.
