Von der Leyen and Trump agree to meet amid ongoing trade tensions

On Saturday, April 26th, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. President Donald Trump briefly discussed a formal meeting during a conversation at Pope Francis’s funeral, according to an EU spokesperson.

In a short exchange, the two leaders agreed to sit down for talks at a later date, though no specific time frame was provided, as noted by EU spokeswoman Paula Pinha.

This potential meeting comes amid ongoing global trade disputes, particularly following Trump’s controversial tariffs on U.S. trading partners, including the European Union. Although Trump has since walked back some of those measures, the EU is still engaged in negotiations with the U.S. administration, aiming to secure exemptions from the 25% tariffs on European steel, aluminum, and automobiles.
