Eight migrants have died and 29 others were rescued after their boat capsized off the coast of Sfax, in central Tunisia.
The incident highlights Tunisia’s growing role as a key departure point for those attempting to reach Europe illegally. According to officials, the tragedy occurred early Sunday morning near the town of Abwabed — a well-known departure location for migrant crossings to Europe. All passengers on board were foreign nationals, including individuals from sub-Saharan Africa, confirmed Houcem Eddine Jebabli, spokesperson for Tunisia’s National Guard.
Search operations are ongoing for any who may still be missing.
