More than half of Germans support cooperation with the right-wing on migration issues

Just over half of German voters support the controversial decision of the leader of the conservatives, Friedrich Merz, to push for migration reforms in parliament with the backing of the right-wing party “Alternative for Germany” (“AfD”).

These are the results of a survey conducted by the research institute YouGov for dpa. 52% of respondents supported Merz’s move last week, while 38% expressed opposition.

Merz’s actions sparked protests in Germany when he seemingly broke a long-standing ban on cooperating with the right-wing by voting for a non-binding proposal in the Bundestag with the support of the AfD.

However, a survey conducted from Friday to Tuesday showed that the majority of Germans support these measures: 63% agree with returning migrants without valid visas at the border, even if they are seeking asylum. Only 25% of respondents opposed this policy.
