The Greek island of Amorgos has become the second island in the country to declare a state of emergency due to high seismic activity.
According to AFP, the decision was made following another series of tremors, reaching a magnitude of 5.0, that struck early Wednesday morning. By midday, additional tremors with magnitudes ranging from 4.0 to 4.7 were recorded.
Seismologists from the University of Athens registered over 14,000 tremors between January 26 and February 9 in the sea area between the islands of Santorini, Amorgos, Ios, and Anafi.
Despite the intensity of the earthquakes, local authorities stated that inspections on Amorgos did not reveal significant structural damage.
Increased seismic activity in the Santorini-Amorgos area began around January 26. Due to frequent tremors, which could be a precursor to a major earthquake, thousands of residents and tourists have left the islands. Schools on Santorini have been closed, and emergency response teams have been placed on high alert.
The strongest tremor during this period, with a magnitude of 5.3, struck Santorini on the evening of February 10.
