Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has sharply criticized European leaders, accusing them of trying to block U.S. President Donald Trump’s attempts to negotiate a peace deal in Ukraine.
Speaking during a visit to Kazakhstan, Szijjártó claimed that “anti-Trump and pro-war” European leaders are set to gather in Paris to prevent Trump’s proposed agreement. He argued that Trump’s return to power has significantly shifted the global political landscape, benefiting both Hungary and Kazakhstan.
“We are talking about two countries that have always taken a peacekeeping stance, consistently pursued a patriotic and sovereign political strategy, always stood on the foundation of normalcy, and always prioritized national interests,” he said.
Szijjártó underscored the urgent need to end the war in Ukraine, stating that both Hungary and Kazakhstan have suffered substantial economic setbacks due to the conflict. He asserted that Trump’s approach currently represents the best opportunity for peace.
“That is why we welcome the resumption of high-level U.S.-Russia dialogue. We are pleased and reassured that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin had a thorough discussion,” he added.
He also expressed Hungary’s support for continued U.S.-Russia negotiations, highlighting that foreign ministers Marco Rubio and Sergey Lavrov have already discussed future cooperation and potential solutions for the Ukraine conflict.
