Germany’s Green Vice Chancellor Habeck criticizes Musk’s influence, calls for stricter tech regulations”

During a recent ARD electoral debate, German Economics Minister Robert Habeck sparked controversy with his pointed comments, particularly targeting Friedrich Merz and Elon Musk. Habeck criticized Musk’s influence, calling it a “massive attack on our values,” warning that Musk’s “right-wing extremist fantasies” could undermine democracy.

He also voiced concerns about the growing power of tech oligarchs, notably Musk and U.S. President Biden, stressing the need for European regulation to safeguard local values.

On economic topics, Habeck was less forthcoming, avoiding direct answers, especially regarding the taxation of investment income. When pressed about which income levels would be affected, he dodged specifics, instead claiming his reforms would benefit 95% of the population. He also criticized Merz’s economic proposals, accusing him of lacking a realistic plan for funding them.

Habeck did offer thoughts on housing and climate protection. On the housing market, he supported linking social benefits like Bafög to inflation and extending rent controls, dismissing Merz’s call to abolish them as flawed. On climate policy, Habeck strongly opposed Merz’s stance on “technology openness,” calling it a “chimera” that could derail climate goals. He warned that if Europe follows the U.S. in withdrawing from climate efforts, it could be disastrous.

In general, Habeck’s debate strategy focused more on critiquing his competitors than offering concrete solutions. He argued that Europe must remain steadfast in its climate goals and regulate big tech to prevent further erosion of democratic values.
