The Czech government has approved an initiative to gradually increase the defense budget starting in 2026, with the goal of reaching 3% of GDP by 2030.
As Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala noted, defense spending will increase by 0.2% as early as next year. In 2026, this figure will reach 2.2% of GDP, and by 2030, it will rise to 3%. According to him, NATO countries may agree on an even more significant increase in military spending. He also reminded that the United States is urging European countries to take greater responsibility for their security.
Earlier, Fiala emphasized that the Czech defense budget should be increased to at least 3% of GDP in the coming years. Additionally, the prime minister noted that former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend aid to Ukraine highlights the urgent need for a fundamental shift in European security policy.
