Member of the European Parliament from Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s party, Erik Kaliňák, made a statement, noting that if Russia captures Kyiv, Slovakia will have a more reliable neighbor.
In response to a journalist’s question about the possible consequences of Russia seizing Kyiv, he stated that he would “be a cynic” and emphasized that in such a case, Slovakia would gain a more reliable partner in Russia.
If you look at Slovak-Ukrainian relations and how many times we had to save them after they created an economic conflict with Russia, and how many times they were unable to help us, then from this perspective, the Russians are a more reliable partner for us, Kaliňák said.
Kaliňák pointed out that economic conflicts often arose in relations between Slovakia and Ukraine, and Ukraine was unable to assist Slovakia. From this perspective, he said, Russia is a more reliable partner.
The statement was met with sharp criticism from the Slovak opposition. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Robert Fico accuses Ukraine of misappropriating European aid.
