Romania arrests 101-year-old general in state treason case

Six people have been detained in Romania on suspicion of treason and attempting to overthrow the constitutional order. Among the suspects is 101-year-old retired Major General Radu Teodoru, according to Digi24.

According to the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), the suspects formed an organized group in 2023 with the aim of undermining the sovereignty and independence of the country. Investigators believe that members of the group were in contact with “foreign agents” in Romania and Russia, and they also traveled to Russia several times to discuss their plans for seizing power.

The alleged goals of the conspirators included withdrawing Romania from NATO, adopting a new constitution, changing national symbols, dissolving political parties, and forming a new government composed of “their own people.” The group actively sought like-minded individuals through social media.

One of the movement’s leaders was General Radu Teodoru. He was an active member of the organization “Our Cause,” which opposed NATO and the EU. In 2023, the National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania called him a militant anti-Semite.

Previously, the Romanian Ministry of Defense publicly congratulated Teodoru on his 101st birthday, but following the scandal, it issued an apology and condemned his views.
