In the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, mass protests against pension cuts have been taking place for several weeks.
The most recent demonstrations, which have become the largest and most violent during Javier Milei’s presidency, saw football fans join pensioners, leading to riots and clashes with the police.
According to Argentina’s Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich, about 150 people were arrested as a result of the unrest. The protesters included ultras, left-wing groups, and supporters of Kirchnerism, who united with the goal of overthrowing the current government.
Around 1,000 police officers were mobilized to disperse the demonstration. Protesters set fire to a police car and several trash containers, and the authorities used tear gas. Bullrich stated that the protesters attempted to seize the Congress building. As a result of the clashes, several people were injured.
