Macron, Scholz and Merz to discuss the deployment of French nuclear weapons in the EU

Today, French President Emmanuel Macron will meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the leader of the Christian Democratic Union, Friedrich Merz.

One of the topics to be discussed may be the proposal to deploy French nuclear weapons on the territory of Germany and other EU countries, according to Bild.

Critics of this idea argue that France aims to modernize its nuclear arsenal at the expense of other countries, while not being willing to share responsibility for its use with partners. In turn, Macron noted that he “wants to believe that the United States will remain on our side,” but emphasized the need to be prepared for the possibility of a change in their position.

Friedrich Merz, the likely future Chancellor of Germany, expressed support for discussing this issue, stating that “now, more than ever,” it is important for Germany to engage in such discussions without taboos. He also stressed that for the security of Europe, cooperation should be established not only with France but also with the UK and the US, creating a joint nuclear defense shield.

However, current Chancellor Scholz remains a staunch advocate for the presence of US nuclear weapons in Germany, considering them essential for national security.
