U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington will assess Moscow’s demands after Russia “in principle” agreed to a ceasefire in the Black Sea with Ukraine to ensure maritime security.
According to Reuters, Rubio noted that during a meeting in Saudi Arabia, the Russian side provided a detailed list of conditions it expects to be met.
He further explained that U.S. officials will work to thoroughly understand Russia’s position and its demands before presenting their analysis to President Donald Trump, who will then decide on the next steps.
Rubio also clarified that one of Moscow’s key demands involves easing European Union sanctions.
Following negotiations held in Saudi Arabia from March 23 to 25, the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine agreed to ensure maritime security in the Black Sea, rule out the use of force, and prevent commercial vessels from being used for military purposes.
However, after the meeting, Russia presented a list of conditions, including a partial lifting of sanctions on the agricultural sector. President Donald Trump confirmed that his administration will review these demands before making a final decision on whether to agree to the ceasefire.
