Vilnius prepares school places for children of German brigade soldiers

The Vilnius municipality is preparing 100 school places for the children of soldiers from the German brigade, who will begin their studies in the Lithuanian capital in September.

According to the Ministry of Education, up to 600 children of German soldiers may study in Vilnius in the future.

The first facility to be adapted for this purpose will be the Lithuanian Center for the Education of the Blind and Visually Impaired. Currently, the center educates children from local families, but in September, they will be relocated to another facility to make room for the children of the German brigade’s military personnel.

“In September, we plan to start with three groups, but the number will be expanded later,” said Neria Moskalenene, the center’s director.

Initially, up to 100 children will study at the institution, with plans for further expansion in the future.

German representatives evaluated several potential locations in Vilnius before selecting the Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. According to Thomas Gedminas, a representative of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sports, this location was chosen due to its spacious courtyard and existing infrastructure, although some modifications will be necessary.

School-age children will follow the German education program, meaning German partners will recruit teachers from Germany. However, preschool-aged children will study under Lithuanian programs.
