“Alternative for Germany” became the leader in the ranking of German political parties for the first time

The right-wing party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) has, for the first time in history, surpassed the conservative CDU/CSU bloc in a public opinion poll, becoming the most popular political force in the country. These are the findings of a recent survey conducted by the research company Ipsos on behalf of Die Welt.

According to the results published on Sunday, the CDU/CSU has lost five percentage points, dropping to 24% — its lowest level of support in the past three years. At the same time, “Alternative for Germany” gained three points, reaching 25%, and for the first time became the top party in the rankings.

While the conservatives are losing ground amid protracted coalition negotiations, other parties are also showing fluctuating support.

The Social Democratic Party maintains a stable 15% backing among voters. The Green Party lost one percentage point and now shares fourth place with The Left, both at 11%. For The Left, this marks their best result since December 2016.

The Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance is approaching the 5% electoral threshold, while the Free Democratic Party remains at 4% and risks not making it into parliament. All other parties combined would receive around 5% of the vote.

The survey was conducted online from April 4 to 5, with 1,000 eligible voters participating. According to Ipsos, the poll is representative.
