European Union member states have backed a proposal by the European Commission to impose trade countermeasures against the United States, according to a statement from the Commission’s press service.
The decision comes in response to tariffs introduced by the United States in March on steel and aluminum imports from the EU. Although the specific measures have not yet been officially announced, media reports suggest that the European countermeasures will target American goods worth approximately €21–22 billion. The list is expected to include products such as soybeans, motorcycles, and orange juice — goods that are particularly important to several Republican-leaning U.S. states.
According to Bloomberg, bourbon was likely excluded from the final list, possibly due to pressure from EU wine-producing countries after Donald Trump threatened to impose 200% tariffs on European wines.
