Meteorologists in Poland have issued warnings that the country is facing powerful thunderstorms, strong winds, heavy rainfall, and even tornadoes.
Poland’s Government Security Center has announced an alert for thunderstorms and strong winds. According to the center, there is even a risk of tornadoes in the central-eastern part of the country.
Thunderstorms are forecasted in the Łódź Voivodeship and parts of the Subcarpathian, Lublin, Świętokrzyskie, Masovian, Greater Poland, and Kuyavian-Pomeranian voivodeships. These storms may be accompanied in places by very heavy rainfall – from 20 mm to 35 mm, in some areas up to 40 mm – and wind gusts up to 85 km/h, in some areas up to 100 km/h.
Due to the severe weather conditions, the Security Center sent out an alert:
“Attention! Today and during the night of April 19th, severe storms and strong winds are expected. Find a safe shelter during bad weather,” the message reads.
People are urged to avoid being outdoors, not to stand under trees, near power poles, or metal structures, and to stay out of water and avoid touching metal objects during a thunderstorm.
If caught in a storm while in a car, it is advised not to leave the vehicle unless it’s possible to take shelter in a building.
People are also encouraged to follow safety precautions indoors during the storm – to keep windows closed and stay away from them.
