Zelensky-allied Ukrainian MP nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

Ukrainian MP Oleksandr Merezhko announced on Wednesday that he would nominate Donald Trump for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.

In an interview with Ukrinform, Merezhko praised Trump’s efforts in the Middle East, particularly for the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel, Bahrain, and the UAE. He also credited Trump with strengthening Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression by being the first U.S. president to provide military aid to Ukraine.

Merezhko, head of the Ukrainian Parliament’s foreign policy committee, expressed hope that Trump, if re-elected, would avoid pressuring Ukraine to give up land to Russia. He also acknowledged that nominating Trump was partly an effort to attract his attention to Ukraine’s plight. Despite Trump’s critical stance on Biden’s Ukraine policies, Ukrainian President Zelensky has maintained good relations with him, recently calling their communication “excellent” and supporting Trump’s “peace through strength” approach.

This isn’t the first time Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2018, South Korea’s Moon Jae-in suggested Trump should win for his diplomacy with North Korea, and in 2020, European lawmakers nominated him for his role in the Abraham Accords and efforts in the Balkans.
