French newspapers, including “Le Monde,” “Le Figaro,” and “Le Parisien,” announced their intention to file a lawsuit against social media platform X for allegedly using their content without proper payment, reports Reuters.
Representatives for X did not respond to requests for comment. The newspapers claim they are entitled to payment under their ancillary rights, which require digital platforms to compensate news outlets for distributing their content. They noted that X, formerly known as Twitter, has never shown willingness to start negotiations with French news publishers, unlike companies such as Google and Meta Platforms.
Additionally, the newspapers report that X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, has not complied with a Paris Court order issued in May to release information necessary for calculating the debt owed. A spokesperson for the Paris tribunal confirmed the case and stated that a hearing is scheduled for May 15, 2025.
