In Thuringia, Sarah Wagenknecht’s Alliance party has entered a coalition for the first time

In the German federal state of Thuringia, a coalition agreement was signed on December 11, marking the first time the Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance (SWA) will become part of a state government.

The agreement, finalized at the end of November, was signed by the leaders of SWA, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).

The coalition agreement includes several controversial provisions, particularly regarding the deployment of American missiles in Germany, which has sparked disagreements among coalition members.

As part of the deal, the CDU leader in Thuringia, Mario Voigt, will be nominated for the position of state premier. Although no other parties have put forward candidates, the coalition controls only 44 out of 88 votes, leaving the outcome of the December 12 vote uncertain.

To secure Voigt’s election, the three parties are relying on support from the Left Party faction, but negotiations on this matter are still ongoing.

If the vote is successful, Thuringia will become the second federal state where the Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance joins a ruling coalition, following Brandenburg.
