U.S. Supreme Court to consider banning TikTok

The US Supreme Court will hear arguments from TikTok and its parent company ByteDance on January 10 regarding a potential ban over alleged ties to the Chinese government, which both companies deny.

The case pits national security concerns against free speech rights, with TikTok claiming the ban violates the Constitution. Earlier, a federal appeals court upheld the legislation, citing bipartisan support.

TikTok welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision, hoping to protect the platform’s 170 million US users. Meanwhile, civil liberties groups argue the ban would stifle free expression.

While Donald Trump has voiced opposition to the ban, prominent lawmakers like Mitch McConnell support it. If the ban proceeds, analysts predict Instagram’s parent company Meta could gain significant advantages in the short-form video market.
