German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and her French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot, are traveling to Syria for a crucial meeting with the country’s new authorities, representing the European Union.
The two ministers are set to meet with rebel leader Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus as part of their diplomatic mission.
“My trip today – together with my French colleague and on behalf of the EU – sends a clear message to the Syrians: a new political starting point for Europe and Syria, for Germany and Syria, is possible,” Baerbock stated.
She further emphasized, “We have in mind a goal that millions of Syrians are thinking about: that Syria can once again become a respected member of the international community.”
