Three men have been arrested in Zaragoza in connection with a brutal gang rape that took place in September.
The victim, who had previously reported being harassed by a group of men of Arab descent, recognized one of her attackers two months after the assault at a housing shelter.
The Spanish National Police revealed the arrests following an investigation into the shocking attack. The woman was found unconscious in a storage room of an apartment building near Río Ara Street, where she had been left half-naked. Officers who were patrolling the area discovered her, and she was rushed to Miguel Servet Hospital, where the necessary procedures for sexual assault cases were quickly initiated.
The woman had been staying at a municipal shelter in Zaragoza when she identified one of the men involved in the attack. This crucial recognition prompted a faster investigation, leading to the arrests of the three suspects. Authorities have kept details of the suspects and the case under wraps due to the ongoing investigation.
At the time of the assault, the woman had been out visiting bars in the city, but she has no memory of how she ended up in the storage room. When she regained consciousness, she found herself surrounded by three men who proceeded to sexually assault her. Prior to the attack, she had reported ongoing harassment at the shelter by men of Arab origin, which led her to eventually leave the facility.
The case has now been taken up by Investigative Court Number 2 in Zaragoza, with the Family and Women’s Unit of the National Police continuing their inquiries. As the investigation unfolds, the community remains deeply shaken by the disturbing crime.
