Over one million Germans support police petition to ban fireworks

A petition launched by the Berlin Police Union (GdP) calling for a nationwide ban on the use of fireworks on private property has gathered over one million signatures.

As of the time of reporting, more than 1.1 million people have signed the petition to ban fireworks for private use in Germany. “It continues to gain momentum – you can no longer ignore it; this is a democratic mandate,” the Berlin Police Union added. The petition calls for a ban on fireworks on private properties, which would serve as “an important first step toward greater safety for emergency services on New Year’s Eve.”

“What we experienced last New Year’s Eve is beyond any acceptable limits. This mass violence against our colleagues must stop,” the petition states.

In the days leading up to and on New Year’s Eve, many people in Berlin were injured, some seriously, due to illegal fireworks. Five people across Germany lost their lives.
