After the U.S. Supreme Court approved a law providing for the ban of TikTok, President-elect Donald Trump promised to announce his decision on the matter soon.
On the social media platform Truth Social, Trump noted that the court’s decision was expected and must be upheld.
My decision on TikTok will be made in the near future, but I need time to analyze the situation. Stay tuned! he wrote.
The court ruled that the federal government has the authority to shut down TikTok based on a law passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden. The law requires either separating TikTok from its Chinese parent company or ceasing the app’s operations in the U.S. Starting January 19, Apple and Google must remove TikTok from their app stores, and web hosting companies must cease their cooperation with the platform under the threat of multibillion-dollar fines.
The White House reminded that Biden supported the law, but its implementation will fall to the next administration, which begins its work on January 20. Trump, for his part, expressed a more favorable stance toward TikTok, noting its popularity and high user activity. His future National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, stated that the president-elect “will find a way” to maintain access to TikTok for Americans.
